The scenario starts time JUL030400 (30min before daybreak)
a) Enemy After a Shura, the battalion commander has received human intelligence from one of the local elders regarding a weapon cache and two T-55s hidden away for Taliban usage in the area of ZB01 and ZB02, the village of MAFARAZ GR 052103. The two T-55s are according to the source located in some kind of garage or storage east of the town, S2 has identified 3 possible locations named TAI A1 to TAI A3 that suit the constructions needed to hide two tanks. The weapon cache is located at TAI B1 (GR 050104) and according to intelligence is either located in one of the houses even if the source couldn’t say which building it was. The weapon cache is supposed to contain small arms, RPGs, and even MANPADS plus ammunition, so it’s a vital weapon cache for the Taliban. MLECOA is that the Taliban will try to defend their T-55 and Weapon cache to its fullest but the defense will be rather uncoordinated at first as they are not expecting our presence. If they have the option they will man the tanks and use them in the fight rather than risk losing them without using them. Expect smaller fireteams armed with only AK and RPG initially but if they fighting get prolonged expect Dishka and mortars being used in support as well. The weapon cash and tanks are so important that we can not even rule out suicide bombers in an attempt to force us off the ground. MDECOA 1 is that the enemy has time enough to crew the T-55s and use them against us as we set down in the helicopters or catch us in terrain where we can not affect the tanks while they can affect us. MDECOA 2 is that this is a setup and the Taliban will be prepared that we are coming and have crewed the Tanks already, moved the weapon stash, and triggered the area with IED to create casualties. b) Friendly forces No change regarding our own battalion. No ANA or ANP activity is reported in the AO during our operation. ANA has not been informed about this patrol in order to not give away intel to Taliban so in the worst case ANA or ANP could be active in the area that we are not aware of, so PID your targets. c) Attachments/Detachments + Air detachment with Rotary wing and fixed-wing assets as needed. Airframes available: MH-47, AH-64 d) Civilians Continue to act respectively towards the civilians but stay vigilant as they still might be informants for the Taliban. e) Terrain & Weather The village of MAFARAZ is located in a valley surrounded by high hills in all four cardinal directions, with MSR THUNDER running through the northern part of ZB01 and ZB02. In the south part of ZB01 and ZB02 runs a dry riverbed that has no movement impact due to its size and location. In the northwestern corner of ZB01 are the BUSHLURKER CAMP BASE GR 052107 that once was a training location for Australian Special Forces but are now empty, we have no intel if the Taliban have mined that FOB as they did with MIKES FOB so if you decide to move in and use it, make sure to sweep it first.
1st Platoon A Coy is to conduct a helicopter inserted foot patrol of MAFARAZ in order to locate and destroy 2 x T-55 and a weapon cache NLT JUL030700.
a) Commander's intent 1. Purpose of the Operation (big picture) The purpose of the operation is to deny the Taliban two working T-55s and a weapon cache by destroying them. However, this intel is from an informant that will be revealed if we just raid the locations. Therefore this has to be a normal foot patrol in the village area where we stumble across the T-55 and Weapon caches! 2. Key Tasks - Conduct a “regular” foot patrol of ZB02 in order to not give away our informant. - Locate 2 x T-55 in ZB02 and destroy them. - Conduct sporadic house raids in ZB01 outside of TAI B1 - Raid TAI B1, locate and destroy weapon cache. 3. End State 1 Terrain -TAI A1 to A3 has been searched for T-55, TAI B1 has been searched for weapon cache. 2 Friendly forces - is back at FOB KINDUF in good health prepared to conduct follow on missions. 3 Enemy forces - that has opposed us is destroyed or fled the area. - 2 x T-55s have been destroyed. - 1 x weapon cache has been destroyed. b)Concept of operation Phase 1 is the air insert, foot patrol of ZB02, and destruction of 2 x T-55. Phase 2 is the foot patrol of MAFARAZ and the locating and destruction of the weapon cache Phase 3 is exfil back to FOB KINDUF by helicopter. c) Scheme of Maneuver Phase 1 Begins when the platoon starts preparations and ends when the 2 T-55s are destroyed. 1st Platoon will conduct pre-combat preparations and thereafter mount up in Helicopter and insert in ZB02 on suitable LZ, patrol ZB02 and locate and destroy 2 x T-55. Phase 2 Begins when the platoon is moving from area ZB02 into ZB01 (MAFARAZ) and ends when the weapon cache is destroyed. 1st Platoon will conduct follow on patrol into ZB01 (village of MAFARAZ) and conduct faint raids on suitable compounds to mask our intel. Thereafter raid TAI B1 and locate and destroy the Cache by explosives. Phase 3 Begins once the weapon cache is destroyed and ends when the platoon conducts a debrief back at FOB KINDUF. 1st Platoon will exfil back to FOB KINDUF by helicopter from suitable LZ. d) Tasks to maneuver units 1st Platoon A Coy: Phase 1 - Conduct pre-combat preparations, give order, and mount up in a helicopter at the helicopter pad. - Conduct heli- insertion in ZB02. - Patrol ZB02, locate and destroy 2 x T-55s. Phase 2 - Conduct foot patrol of MAFARAZ - Conduct several faint raids on suitable compounds to mask our intel - Conduct raid on TAI B1, locate and destroy weapon cache Phase 3 - Identify a suitable LZ - Exfil by helicopter back to FOB KINDUF - Conduct Debrief at FOB KINDUF. e) Coordination instructions 1) ROE: - Only armed personnel with clear hostile intent is allowed to be engaged. - Artillery or bombs are allowed on compounds where enemy fire is coming from as long as no civilians have been identified in a danger close area of the target. - In extreme cases an unarmed person clearly identified as an enemy spotter may be engaged, this, however, has to be cleared through Godfather before engaging for each engagement.
